Chapter 21: Hausen Family (3)

Donovan repeated deep breaths, suppressing his anger, while Daisy turned pale and trembled.

“You must have seen the portrait in the gallery of this house when you were a child. A child with colors like Fiene is born every two to three generations,” Donovan said.

“Hmph, the Elven legend passed down in the Hausen family. Indeed, Fiene looks exactly like great-grandmother in the portrait. But Fiene lacks the essential magic,” Rolf sneered.

“Will you two stop it already! Do you even understand what you’ve done?” Donovan exclaimed.

Rolf and Muge exchanged glances. They expected their parents to oppose knowing Fiene’s remaining time, but they didn’t anticipate Donovan’s level of anger.

“Both Father and Mother were neglecting Fiene, weren’t they?” Muge asked curiously. Fiene was indeed a troublesome figure in the Hausen family.

“We never meant it that way,” Daisy said, her face turning pale as she tightly gripped her hands on her knees.

“But you didn’t let that child leave the house, did you?”

“That’s because people in other families would say all sorts of things. It was, in a way, to protect Fiene,” Donovan answered with a bitter expression.

Even in high society, there were still rumors about Fiene being Daisy’s illegitimate child. No matter how much Donovan explained that Fiene was a spitting image of her great-grandmother due to ancestral traits, it was futile.

Donovan had considered dyeing Fiene’s hair, but since her eye color and facial features resembled no one in the family, he gave up on the idea quickly.

Despite being born with good looks, Fiene had no choice but to be confined within the house.

Muge harbored significant dissatisfaction with the recent state of the Hausen family.

Finally, her parents had prohibited her from socializing. The reason was the high medical expenses for Maggie. The suppressants were expensive.

“Why do I have to lock myself up at home and take care of Maggie?” Muge complained.

Despite her words, Muge secluded herself in her room, and in reality, her mother and the maid took care of Maggie.

However, the Hausen family was facing financial difficulties, and her mother was running around trying to gather money. It was all because of Maggie.

“Muge, make sure to manage the medicine.”

Daisy always reminded Muge of this before going out.

“Understood. If she has so much magic overflowing, why not just share it with Fiene?”

Hearing that, Daisy sighed.

“Magic overflow syndrome doesn’t work that way. Maggie has a small vessel for storing magic. It overflows from there.”

“In other words, Maggie’s magic quantity and the vessel for storing her magic don’t match? Why does such a thing happen?”

“Well, I think it’s probably something like that. Muge, if we knew the cause, it wouldn’t be so difficult.”

Daisy said wearily.

Muge thought that she hated this gloomy house.

Even her older brother Rolf, who used to play with her recently, was now helping Donovan anxiously. He changed since the day he was shown the family accounts by their father.

When she invited him to sneak out and play together, he scolded her, saying, “What are you saying when the Hausen Earldom is at stake?” Rolf was quite anxious, realizing that the family might decline, and unfortunately, he lacked the power to establish himself as a magician.

However, for Muge, it felt like their anxiety was someone else’s problem since all she needed to do was marry into a good family.

And so, she hatched a plan.

“That’s it! We should inform Fiene. She used to care for Maggie before. She won’t abandon her sick sister!”

She wondered why her family hadn’t thought of such a simple solution.

All they needed to do was get financial help from Fiene, who seemed to be favored by the eccentric duke.

Without delay, Muge headed to Maggie’s room and forced her reluctant sister to write a letter.
